Vicca

Vicca was born in Moscow, Russia, on 13 August 1974. She came from a privileged upper middle-class background, excelled at school, especially in mathematics and physics, and was part of the Russian national junior fencing team. She eventually learnt four languages and became a member of Mensa, the oldest and most well-known high IQ society in the world. At age 14 Vicca was noticed by a Russian model scout, and for the next two years spent her weekends posing for various magazine adverts, eventually winning the Miss Teen Moscow pageant. Her modelling career ended in 1990 though, when she decided to attend a Siberian college, majoring in Optical Electrical Systems. Although succeeding in her studies, Vicca began to miss the glamour and travel that a career in modelling entailed. At 17 she quit college and returned to Moscow, before eventually moving to Budapest and spending the next four years travelling all over the globe on numerous photo shoots.

In 1994, realising that her career in fashion could only go so far, Vicca turned to the Adult industry in search of fame and fortune. Soft-core eventually led to hard-core, and in 1995 she appeared in her first porn film. “I expected it to be rougher,” she later admitted, “but people are nice and friendly.” Despite often working in Italy, Germany and France, her base at this point was Budapest due to the explosion of porn films made in Hungary by European companies during the mid-1990's. There was an abundance of girls willing to work in porn and costs were low. Over the next two years she co-starred alongside major European names such as Laure Sainclair, Kelly Trump, Anita Blonde and Erika Bella. Her stunning body, beautiful face and enthusiasm for sex meant that she soon became one of the big names in European porn. The fact that she was openly bisexual made things easier: “Girl-girl sex is a fantasy while boy-girl is regular sex. I can enjoy either, depending on how I feel at the time.” Nevertheless, she was still unable to break into the top division of starlets. At the time Europe had become saturated with girls from the former Eastern Bloc: Anita Blonde, Anita Dark, Sylvia Saint, Lea Martini, Monique Covet, Tania Russof, Nikki Anderson, Erika Bella, to name but a few.

In late 1996 she moved to the States, had a breast operation, changed her name from Victoria Queen to Vicca, and signed an exclusive contract with VCA. Within a year she was joined by another Russian porn star named Nikita. The two knew each other from the days when they worked as mainstream models in Europe, and were often cast together in movies. "All people ask us is 'Are you lovers?' We just say, 'Hmmmm… think what you want to think.' People have these stereotypes. They see friends and think that if they spend a lot of time together they must be lovers, which is fine, but I just don't want to say anything about it."

Although Vicca enjoyed working in the States, her Russian accent meant that she was always stuck in the same roles. "They put us in movies where we play either spies or people who do not speak English. No offence, but when I tell people I'm from Russia, they go, 'Das ve dania,' which actually means 'Goodbye' and they think they impress me so much."

She was also realistic and at times cynical about the Adult industry: "Usually people just ask the same questions all the time [in interviews]. By the end, they'll be like, 'Can you show me your boobs?' In any case, these films are not about a story but about sex and in this industry, sex is what counts although I like acting, too." Realising this, she never took herself seriously: "Store signings are my favourite… usually fans are there, so you hear all the nice things about you, and oh God, at the end of the day, (strikes a pose) I'm soooo beautiful and I'm soooo good, and then you start believing things, and you come back home and (laughs) and it's only me."

Despite being a VCA contract girl, Vicca continued doing mainstream modelling: "mainly for malls and clothing catalogues… some European stuff... runways... I worked in New York, but not so much in L.A. Modelling stills are hard; they take the whole day and you have to hold the poses. [Adult] movies are fun, you get to work with different people and pretend you are someone else. Runways, I think, are the easiest. But there is a lot of competition in that field… It's better to be professional at something than to split one's attention everywhere. Anyway, I think that fashion and real life are just so far away from each other. You look at what they're selling in these fashion shows, then you look at what people are wearing on the street, and they really have nothing to do with each other."

Vicca became one of the most popular European porn stars in the States. She was also one of the most interesting and broke the stereotypical mould of what porn actresses should be like. She had a dry sense of humour: "I don't like clubbing. When I have time, I dig a hole in my backyard. I am trying to get to China. Now it's like my hobby. Every time I have some free time, I dig a hole. But some people tell me that if I dig a hole in my own backyard, it is not going to end up in China, it is going to end up somewhere in the ocean, and that is upsetting to me." Furthermore, she spoke four languages, had a college education, enjoyed fencing in her spare time and read Dostoyevsky for fun!
