Image by Getty Images via @daylife Harold Camping has come out of hiding to say that he was wrong when he said the Rapture would happen last Saturday. He's now reset his Rapture clock to October 21. That was the day that he originally said that the world would blow up so technically, he wasn't wrong originally...just sort of; in his mind, at least. If you wonder why I've spoken about the Rapture for the past few weeks a lot, I'll let you in on a little secret. When I was a child, my stepfather used to belong to a similar cult to Camping's little cult. This church, too, was a Jehovah's Witness wannabe, so our family didn't celebrate Christmas, birthdays, Halloween, Easter, etc. This church also believed the world would end on at least a few specific dates. My mom and I used to get told regularly that we were going to Hell for not believing in this cult's particular teachings. My mother finally divorced the asshole when I was 16, which is probably the only thing that saved me from committing murder. This is a major reason why I hate organized religion. Don't get me wrong. I'm spiritual but between groups like Camping's and the fact that a lot of religious people use their version of their Bible to justify hatred of other people, let's just say I'm not a big fan. Anyway, now you know and knowing is half the battle (if you got that last pop culture reference, you either love cartoons way too much or you're old).
